They prefer lower levels of humidity with lots of ventilation and space to roam. Mine seem to spend most of their time under the cork closet to the damp moss. Even with smaller starter colonies, I would highly recommend starting off in a medium – large tub/enclosure to ensure better success. These isopods do very well with lots of air space inside their habitat.
