Porcellio werneri

Ive been keeping my Porcellio werneri isopods for almost a year, and they finally had babies! They are said to be seasonal breeders only producing 1-2 broods a year. So as you can guess, I was very excited. Seeing some babies in there for the first time in almost a year was amazing . They prefer lower levels of humidity with lots of ventilation and space to roam. Mine seem to spend most of their time under the cork closet to the damp moss. Even with smaller starter colonies, I would highly recommend starting off in a medium – large tub/enclosure to ensure better success. These isopods do very well with lots of air space inside their habitat.

It can be quite difficult to master the proper micro climates they require to thrive in. I’ve kept mine in a 28qt tub and they have done very well since the transition. Adults can reach around 26mm (1.02 inches) in length.  They are some of the most distinctive Porcellio species of isopods due to their very flat bodies and size. They will always be some of my most favorite species of isopods I keep!
